The Homepage

(IMG:http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/5048/homepagenew.jpg)

The homepage is the beginning of your adventure to RTS Sanctuary. Everything that you will need to access on the site starts right here. Note that when you become a member, you set a portal homepage, and will not see this page unless you intentional come here. There is a lot to look at, so let's start from the top!

The first thing you see at the top of the homepage is your control bar.

(IMG:http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/4554/topbar1.jpg)

This information tells you what your username is and is where you access My controls and My messages, which will be covered in detail at a later point in this document.

The next thing you will see is a bar with eight different tabs. Each of these tabs brings you to a different part of the site, and will likely be where you will start with your visit to RTSS.

(IMG:http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/7936/dl1h.jpg)

Each of these tabs brings you to a different place:

Home - Returns the you to the homepage of your portal. To go to the main site home page you select RTS-Sanctuary under the "Games" menu.
Games - Gives you the chance to jump between portals for each of the games that RTSS covers.
Forums - Brings you to each of the different areas of the forums (Games, VIP, etc). Note that if you press "new posts" in the drop down box, you will see all the new posts since your last visit.
Replays - Brings you to the replays forums for each of the games.
Community - Brings you to sites that work with RTSS in the gaming community.
Downloads - Brings you to the sites downloads section.
My Tools - Gives you several tools to aid you in your forum usage.
Arcade - Brings you to the RTSS Arcade where you can play Arcade games and compete with other site members for high scores.

Directly below these eight tabs, you will notice that page splits into two separate columns.

The left column covers news that has been posted for the whole site and for each of the individual games. The newest site news is posted first, followed by content from the each game portal. Sometimes, a news article will be rather long and will have a "view more" option:

(IMG:http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/9516/viewmore.jpg)

When this happens, simply click on the view more tab to show the rest of the post.

The right column has three different boxes.

(IMG:http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/5769/homepage4.jpg)

The first of these three boxes is the Support RTSS Box. Like the site? Learn how you can help offset some of the costs of running it!

The second box shows the site statistics. Mostly just an interesting thing to look at to see various figures on sites activity.

The last box shows the users online. The color of someones name represents what member group the user belongs in. There are many different member groups, but the four most important ones are:

Red - Site Administrators
Blue - Site Staff
Green - Site Expert Staff
Black - Site Member

The Portal Homepage

(IMG:http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/4351/portalnew.jpg)

The portal homepage is similar to the site homepage in many ways, but also has a few unique aspects to it.

The first you will notice is that the banner at the top of the page has changed to the game that you have chosen to be your portal homepage (which is selected in My Controls). Your default portal can be changed at any time to any game you wish.

The second and probably most noticeable thing about the portal homepage is the fact that it has three columns instead of two. Each of these columns contains different but useful information.

The left column gives you an overview of the forums. The general and VIP forums are the same for all users regardless of portal, but the game forums are different for each specific game. You are only shown the forums to the game of your preferred portal on the portal homepage. Also in this column you will find the top ten ladder for your selected game. For most ladders there is also the ability to search for the stats of a selected player. In addition you can click on the links in the ladder to see that player's stats.

The middle column is similar to the left column of the site homepage. This is where the news posts are located as well as the replays for your selected portal. The newest site news article is posted first, followed by the newest portal news articles. To see more of the news articles posted for your game or for the site, simply click on the pluses in the more news box.

(IMG:http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/9899/homepage7.jpg)

When you click on a news article, it will be displayed below the more news section like so:

(IMG:http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/5216/morenewsopen.jpg)

Also in the middle column are the replay panels. These panels show the newest recorded games for your game. If more then ten are available, make sure you press "view more replays" to see all of them.

The right column is nearly identical to the right column of the site homepage with one key difference. The selected Game of the Week as well as an additional Spotlight Game and recent user content uploaded by the site's members are featured here as well.

The Forums

The forums are the heart and soul of the site. This is the place where you can ask questions and discuss the games with other site users.

There are currently eleven different forums, but depending on your portal settings, you will only see the ones for your game. You can of course access many of the different forums and they are as follows:

General Forums - The general forums are as the name implies, very general. Anything from the Site News and Rules to the off topic section can be found here.

VIP Forums - The VIP forums are reserved for VIP members. Anyone can become a VIP member by supporting the site with a monetary donation. The VIP section is a loosely moderated section where the members can discuss things that are not allowed for discussion in the other sections of the forums, such as religion and politics.

Age of Empires III Forums - This is the forum dedicated to Age of Empires III and it's expansion packs. All discussion and recorded games for this game can be found here.

Age of Mythology Forums - This is the forum dedicated to Age of Mythology and it's expansion pack. All discussion and recorded games for this game can be found here.

StarCraft II Forums - This is the forum dedicated to StarCraft II. All discussion and recorded games for this game can be found here.

The Conquerers Forums - This is the forum dedicated to Age of Empires II: The Conquerers. All discussion and recorded games for this game can be found here.

Warhammer General Forums - For general discussion of the Warhammer games.

SoulStorm Forums - This is the forum dedicated the Dawn of War: SoulStorm expansion. All discussion and replays for this game can be found here.

DoWPro Forums - This forum is dedicated to the DoWPro mod for Dawn of War. All discussion and recorded games for this game can be found here.

Dawn of War II Forums - This forum is dedicated Dawn of War II. All discussion and replays for this game can be found here.

Dawn of War Archived Forums - This forum is the archived forum for Dawn of War.

It is important to note that at times, special forums may be created for special events, like major tournaments.

If you are in any of the forums for a specific game, you can easily access the forums for other games by going to the forums tab on the top bar, and clicking on "Other game forums."

(IMG:http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/3277/othergamesforum.jpg)

At the bottom of the Forum Index, you will see something that looks like this:

(IMG:http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/2353/forums1o.jpg)

This part of the forum can be very useful. From here you can see:

Who is online
The top ten posters for the day
A list of all staff members - useful if you need to contact one of them
Mark all posts as read function - let's you mark everything as read so when you return you can see what posts are new
Delete cookies function - use this if you are on a public computer

It is important to note that at times, special forums may be created for special events, like major tournaments.

There are three main ways to post on the site:

(IMG:http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/7470/posting1.jpg)

Fast Reply - Opens a box where you can add text for making a quick post
Add Reply - Opens a the Add Reply box which allows you to make a reply with more formatting options
New Topic - Creates a new topic and makes the first post in your new topic (note: new members must have two posts before they are allowed to create new topics)

The New Topic and and Add reply boxes are nearly identical with the exception that the New Topic button creates a new topic of course!

Let's cover how to create a new topic and adding a reply as they are pretty similar.

(IMG:http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/8314/forums2.jpg)

Once against we will begin at the top of the screen and break it down from there.

Topic Settings

(IMG:http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/9222/posting2.jpg)

The topic settings is where you give your topic a name.

Topic Title - the name that will be shown in the forum, so make sure you pick it right the first time

Topic Description - the description that will be associated with your topic title

Code Buttons

(IMG:http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/789/posting3.jpg)

The code buttons are useful to make your posts look nice. Here is what each button does:

B - Makes your text bold
I - Makes your text italics
U - Makes your text underlined
Font - Changes the font of your post
Size - Makes your text bigger or smaller
Color - Makes your text colorful
http:// - Allows you to add a link to a webpage
img - Allows you to post an image from the internet
@ - Allows you to add an email address
quote -
QUOTE
Allows you to quote another member

code -
CODE
Allows you to insert computer code

Here are a few of the shortcuts to these code options for when you are making a fast reply, but still want to include them in your post:

CODE
Bold: alt + b or [B] [/B]
Italic: alt + i or [I] [/I]
Underline: alt + u or [U] [/U]
Font: [FONT=Arial] [/FONT]
SIZE: [SIZE=?] [/SIZE]
Color: [COLOR=Blue] [/COLOR]
Http://: alt + h
IMG: alt + g or [IMG] [/IMG]
E-mail: alt + e
Quote: alt + q or [QUOTE] [/QUOTE]
Code: alt + p or [CODE] [*/CODE] (minus the asterisk)

When posting smilies, you can either click the smiley image or use the following codes to enter them:

Enter Your Post

Pretty self explanatory, enter your main body of text here and use the smilies to add emotion to your posts.

Post Options

This section allows you to choose what you see in your post as far as the emoticons goes and whether or not your signature will be included in the post. In addition you can choose to have an email sent to you when someone responds to your post.

Post Icon

Most users leave this set to use none. If you wish to have an emoticon next to the topic in the forums, you can pick one here.

File Attachment

If you have a file you wish to attach to your post, you can do so with this option.

Additional Posting Options

Now that we have covered how to create a topic and add our reply, let's take a look at a few of the other things that we can do with our posts.

(IMG:http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/7078/posting4.jpg)

You will find this set of options below posts, and each has a specific purpose.

Report - Use this function to report a post that you find inappropriate to the moderation team
^ - Use this button to go to the top of the page
Delete - This option is restricted only to the moderation team
Edit - You have the ability to edit posts that you make
+Quote - Use this button on several posts and then when you go to make a reply, you will quote each of the posts that you pressed the button for. The box will change color or each post that you press this on and will also change to -Quote
Reply - Quotes the person of the post you press reply for and opens the Add Reply box

My Assistant/My Controls Guide

My assistant and my controls are two very helpful and useful things that will make your visit to the forums more enjoyable. Let's start with My Assistant.

(IMG:http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/3884/myassistant1.jpg)

My Assistant can be accessed via the My Tools tab that from the bar near the top of the page. When you click on my assistant, a screen like the one above will open.

Since your last visit...

In this section, you can see all of the new posts since your last visit to the site. My Assistant will break it down into two sections, new posts and new posts in reply to topics you created. This is essentially the same as going "forums"->"new posts."

Show me...

This section is pretty self explanatory and should look familiar. These are the some of the same options that were found at the bottom of the Forum Index.

Search posts for...

This allows you to search through the forums by keyword. This same search function can also be accessed from the My Tools - Search tab.

Search help for...

This allows you to search the help topics by keyword. If you are having trouble getting something to work or need assistance you can often find it in a help topic. Still can't find what you need? Contact a member of the site staff and they will help you work through your problem!

Now that we have seen how My Assistant works, let's take a look at My Controls.

(IMG:http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/7328/mycontrols1.jpg)

My controls is where you get a lot of your personal information sorted out. There is a lot of information available to you here and we will get through most of the important stuff. Let's start at the top left corner.

Messenger

The messenger is where you manage your personal messages. The personal messaging system here at RTSS is pretty simple in nature. You can create and send a message to any person on the site. Think of it as a post or forum thread between only you and one other person. The message is filled out similar to how a new topic on the forums would be filled out.
  • Composing a new message

    (IMG:http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/9483/mycontrols2.jpg)

    Recipients Name

In this section you put who you are sending the message to. In addition you can add several other people in the CC box to send the same message to many people. If you don't know a persons name right off the top of your head, use the search function to look it up.

    Enter Message Title

This section is almost the same as entering a topic title. Choose an appropriate message title as this is what the person who is receiving the message will see.

The rest of the messenger is the same a new topic box and when you are finished, send the message on its way.

  • Inbox
Just like an email inbox, this is where all of your received messages will be stored.

  • Sent Items
These are all of the messages that you have sent. Remember to clean your messages often, as you only get a certain number of messages, which is dependent on your member group.
Personal Profile

The personal profile is where you manage a lot of different things ranging from what portal you see when you access the site to what signature and avatar are associated with your username.
  • Edit Profile Info

    (IMG:http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/3431/update1t.jpg)

When you click on edit profile info, this is the screen you should see. This area of the site is where you can enter in your personal information related to gaming and life in general. Many things are pretty self-explanatory: date of birth, location, interests, etc. But there are somethings that may not be so easy to know what they do.

The most important feature on this page is Preferred Portal Homepage. As we showed earlier, the portal homepage is what you see when you have a portal selected. This is where you select it. The game that you choose will be the game's homepage that comes up when you open the site with your username.

In addition, there is a box that says preferred game for group icon. This icon can be customised through the options here. First you can use the Preferred Game for Group Icon to set which game images are used in your icon - you can choose to not select a game here in which case the default icon for your group will be used. Once you have selected a game you can customise the icon further through the entry for your Favourite game race (eg if you chose AOM then you can edit the Favourite AOM God' field.) In this field you have three main choices 'None' uses the default icon, 'Random' chooses an icon from those available at random or you can choose a specific race in which case that is used for your icon at all times. If you choose a favourite game for your icon that game icon will be used no matter which game portal you may post on. In the example above, my group icon is set to be drawn from the Asian Dynasties game group which means that my tag will use the civilization chosen as my favorite Asian Dynasties civilization, Japan.

  • Edit Signature
This is where you go to edit your signature. A signature is text or a picture or what ever you want that will be seen by users after each of your posts.

  • Edit Avatar
This is where you go to edit your avatar. An avatar is a picture that is associated with your user and will been seen and used by other users to recognize your profile at a glance.
Options

The options section has many things that are once again pretty easy to recognize what they do: change password, change email address, etc.

There is however one option that we should pay special attention to, as it will resolve many problems before they ever occur. As diverse of a group of people as we are, we on the moderation team know that not everyone is always going to get along. This is why we have the manage ignored users option.

(IMG:http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/1760/mycontrols4.jpg)

This feature is very easy to use. Simply use the search box to find the user you wish to ignore and add that user to one of the boxes, press update and its done. If users will use this instead of flaming on the forums, it will save everyone time and headaches.

Another setting that is important to note, are the Board Settings. Here you can edit your Daylight Saving Time settings as well as choosing to make your email address visible or invisible to other users.

Recorded Games Guide

One of the main goals of RTSS is to constantly provide high quality recorded games for the users of the site. In this guide, we will simply show how games are downloaded and uploaded to site. A more in-depth tutorial on creating, uploading, downloading, and watching recorded games for each specific game can be found via the link at the end of this section.

Uploading a game

You start the process of uploading a recorded game by accessing the recorded games forum for the game you wish to upload a recorded game of.

(IMG:http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/4848/rec1e.jpg)

Next choose the right section for you. Each of the recorded games forums is broken into three general sections: One for site expert staff to post in, one for upper level intermediate to advanced players to post in, and one for the general populous to post in. Anyone can watch any recorded game and you should never let your skill level determine whether or not you post a game. If you think it's a good game worthy of posting, then by all means, post it. Please try however, to keep the replays in the correct forum when posting. This saves time for our staff.

Similar to when we made a new topic in the forums, in the recorded games forums, we now have the option to upload a new replay. Click on this button to start the replay upload process. (Note: Clicking on "New Topic" is not the same as clicking on "New Replay."

(IMG:http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/9521/rec2f.jpg)

When you click the new replay button, you will be prompted to find the file that you wish to upload.

(IMG:http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/8857/rec3w.jpg)

Now browse to where the file is saved. For Age of Empires 3 and the expansion packs, the directory is: #USERNAME#/Documents/MyGames/AgeofEmpires3/Savegame
When you get here, you should see something that looks like this:

From here you click the upload button and then fill out the form and then finish the the recorded game upload by pressing submit game details.

Downloading a game

Downloading a game is pretty painless. You can access the recorded games in a few ways. The easiest ways are either through the portal homepage, where the most recent recorded games are shown, or through the the forum index and then selecting the right recorded game forum.

When you get to the topic for the recorded game you wish to download you will find something that looks like this:

(IMG:http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/6950/rec4.jpg)

To download the recorded game, simply press the file name and the download should start automatically. Save this file into the area where your recorded games would normal save, and watch it with the game of that it was played on.

If you are experiencing troubles downloading the game, you can try downloading it as a zip file. To do this, click on the zip icon to the right of the part of the screen shown above. From here you will have to extract the file to the appropriate save game folder. The reason the option to download a zipped file is that some people have weird issues with regional settings that mean they can't watch a replay that is downloaded as a base file but if they download a zip it is fine. The zip file download is only available when the default is NOT a zip file.

In addition, replays can only be downloaded by site members. Make sure you have an account registered at the site before trying to download one of our many replays.

Searching for a replay

If you are looking for a specific replay, (played by a certain player, map, civilization, etc.) you can use the replay database search. To perform a one of these searches, go to the top bar that says Replays and choose your game. A screen like this should come up:

(IMG:http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/9533/rec5j.jpg)

Simply fill in the fields you wish to search by, and start the search. This can be particularly useful if you are searching for an old game, one that would not appear on the list of most recent replays. Note that you can choose to have games appear that match all or any of the search criteria.

Looking for a replay for a different game? They can be easily accessed by going to replays on the top bar and then "other game replays." This will bring you to the sections for the other games' replays.

(IMG:http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/895/othergamesreplay.jpg)

Links for the individual replay guides will be posted as they are created

Downloads Guide

To access the downloads section of the site, simply go to the top bar and select the downloads tab and press "view downloads." If you access it from a portal homepage you will be directly brought to the page for your desired game, and it should look something like this:

(IMG:http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/7267/dl2.jpg)

From here, you will be able to see the eight categories of downloads:

Maps - Custom, user made maps
Modifications - Mods to games such as UI enhancements, etc
Patches - Official and fan made patches
Scenarios - User created scenarios
Replay Packs - Packs of replays from tournaments, special events, etc.
VODs & Audios - Videos on demand and audios
Utilities - User created utilities
Other - Any other useful download

These downloads can be downloaded and uploaded similar to recorded games.

Want to submit a file of your own? Here's how!

First start by once again going under the downloads tab and then selecting add a file. A screen like this should come up:

(IMG:http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/2530/dl3e.jpg)

Similar to filing out a recorded game screen, you will need to file in the required field boxes. Most of them are pretty self-explanatory with the most important field of course being to add your file in the choose file box. Simply fill out the post describing your file and click submit to upload your file. A few things to keep in mind when posting a new download:
  • If you don't know the author of the file and it wasn't you then enter 'Unknown' rather than having it listed with you as the author
  • If the author has a site for the file then include a link. If the file is constantly changing and the author has a site where they publish the latest releases it may be best to include the link to the site rather than the file itself - this can be done by entering the link in the Field "Enter Link to Site" below the File selection at the bottom of the form
  • You can include a screenshot to be displayed with teh file (and you are encouraged to do so)
  • Files can be edited after they are posted but only staff can delete entries from the system
In addition, some files will need to be approved by the moderating team before they will show up in the downloads list.

Important Information

To close out the complete guide to RTS Sanctuary, I think it is important to remind you to take a close look at the rules. This site is meant to have fun, but there are some rules that we need to abide by to make sure that the site remains an enjoyable place to visit. I ask that you please take a close look at the rules here.

If you wish to have your name changed at any time please make a post here.

If you want to post information regarding your clan, check out the Fan Sites/Clan Sites/Affiliates sections under the community menu on the top bar.

If you ever have any troubles with your visit here at RTSS, please feel free to contact any member of our site staff, and we will be glad to help you out. If you have an issue, please contact a member of the site staff first, and if the issue still cannot be resolved, then contact a member of the administration.

I hope that you have found this guide helpful and that you enjoy your stay here at RTS-Sanctuary.

Happy posting,

Zutazuta

I remeber I read something like I was in a trial period since my account just has been created...... I read that I needed to post twice to have acces to the other options such as dowloading replays.... I still cannot do it.... what else do I need to do?? the replays button at the top bar is still unavailable for me

You probably don't have a portal set, which is why you are unable to see the replays tab. Go to the games tab and select a game that you want replays for and then the replays tab should appear when you refresh.

I think it's finally time to update the images in this guide :o

And sorry for bumping.

@lunde515, there should be ""Outline · [ Standard ] · Linear+"" just right to your title bar. Just click standard, and you'll be able to read em all.
