This is a letter I wrote to a church in my area. They refused to answer me after several emails and a couple of phone messages so now it is an open letter.

Zorn, I know you don't like long posts and rarely agree with any of my posts but I think you will like this one.

An Open Letter to the Hunter Street Baptist Church, Hoover, AL

Your church is one of the largest churches I have ever seen. It is close to where I work so I drive by it several times a week. The building is spectacular. The lawn and landscaping is immaculate. The parking lot is almost as large as my home town. I wanted to know more about a congregation of people so generous that they could raise enough money to build such a church. I went to your website. I saw pictures of services. I saw pictures of your church. I saw the beautiful interior of your church. I saw smiling people rejoicing. I saw a choir of happy people singing. It is all very impressive, to say the least.

However, there are some things I have not been able to find.

well done with the letter, i dont believe in god myself but no doubt many churches abuse their priviledges and go against their basic beliefs..

This is exactly why nothing should be tax exempt. This sort of thing could be said about many of the countries Universities, Charities, etc.

These are all in the same category. The invocation of faith for other means is just as profane as the invocation of knowledge.

EDIT: It seems as though you struck a nerve with some of the Conservative Punk posters. Perhaps some of them attend Mega Churches.

I found this old article today.

http://web.jrn.columbia.edu/studentwork/re...ives/000321.asp
Two key quotes:

"Formed in 1907, Hunter Street Baptist Church sits on 42 acres of land used by over 7,000 church members, according to Gene Mason, Hunter Street's communication director. The three adult services each Sunday draw approximately 4,300 returning worshippers in addition to the four to five hundred visitors. The Church operates on a seven million dollar annual budget and, according to Mason, receives $185,000 each Sunday from the offerings."

"When Gray, who has been a pastor at Hunter Street Baptist for 18 years, first began ministering to the church in 1986 the congregation had about 200 members and was located in downtown Birmingham, on Hunter Street. The directors of the church, according to Mason, realized that the church's congregation was primarily comprised of elderly white folk in an increasingly black community.

They decided to relocate
the church to its current location on John Hawkins Parkway.

Now that doesn't prove racism, but it is sure as hell interesting.
