I am pleased to announce the inaugural season of Saturday Smackdown!

What it is:

Each Saturday at 20 GMT (starting on July 19) for 8 weeks, two players will go head to head in a single best of 7 showmatch series. Winners will have the option, but will not be required, to play in the following week's event. Any player able to win back to back series will win 100 USD and automatically qualify for a seeded position in the cash prize Season 1 Smackdown Invitational Tournament to be played at the conclusion of Saturday Smackdown Season 1. Details for the Smackdown Tournament will be released at a later time.

Who can play:

Anyone. Simply sign-up at RTS-Sanctuary.com in that weeks sign-up topic. Sign ups will be posted on Saturday, at the conclusion of that weeks showmatch. Players will be chosen from this list and announced no later than the Wednesday prior to the match. Any player who signs up and fails to show up for the match, will be disqualified from any future matches. The first sign-up topic will be released July 5th, with the first match to be played on July 19th. Please note that for the first week of Smackdown, there will be TWO weeks for applicants to sign up. All other weeks will only have ONE week to sign up.

Where it is:

All games will be played on ESO. The games will be cast by myself and special guests each week on the Official Age of Empires Twitch Stream.

Format for the BO7 each week:

Map Rules:

Each series will be played on these maps, in this order:
Siberia
Saguenay
Mongolia
Patagonia
Painted Desert
New England
Great Plains

If a map is deemed unplayable by the caster, a restart will be allowed, should it be requested by a player before the 2 minute mark of the game. Note that maps may change in following seasons, but for season 1, these will be the maps for each match.

Civilization Rules:

Each player is allowed to play each civilization in a winning effort only once per series. The loser of the previous game has the option of choosing his civilization second in all but the first game. If players cannot agree on a match-up for the first game, a coin flip will determine who has the option of choosing his civilization second.

Example:

Game 1: Zutazuta vs Victor_swe
a. Players cannot agree on a match-up.
b. Zutazuta wins the coin flip.
c. Victor_swe selects Japanese.
d. Zutazuta selects Ottoman.
e. Victor_swe loses, and thus chooses his civ last in the next game.

Game 2: Zutazuta vs Victor_swe
a. Zutazuta selects Japanese.
b. Victor_swe selects Iroquois.
c. Victor_swe wins.
d. In the next game Victor_swe picks his civ first, and may not select Iroquois, while Zutazuta may not select Ottoman.

These rules are simply a formality to avoid counter-civing.

Patch Rules:

The official patch (RE 1.03) will be used for Smackdown Season 1. If the inaugural season of Smackdown is a success, we may consider moving to fan patch for future events. For the time being, we are looking for a patch to maintain community cohesion and RE 1.03 best provides that.

Notes about Smackdown:

Although I will be running things for season 1 of Smackdown, I value all community input. Any concerns or questions regarding rules or format can be directed in my direction. I am also looking for anyone interested in helping co-cast this event. The prizes currently will be as mentioned previously, but may grow pending future sponsorship. Good luck to all participants, and keep an eye out for the first sign-up topic on July 5!

nice idea! i hope i can play :/ i usually work saturdays

you say the first sign up topic will be july 12, but shouldnt it be july 5th? since you said 2 weeks.

some practical issues i have though;

your set starting time of 20 gmt is a bit biased towards certain timezones. it may make it impossible for some people to participate because its simply too late to play a good bo7 or simply to late to play at all. also if it goes all the way to game 7 it may become too late even for european players. Do you have a backup plan for cases such as that? Maybe start a little bit earlier if possible? Or atleast allow players to start earlier/later if they and the casters can find an alternative time.

btw i really dislike patagonia as a map, i think its very unbalanced. i would rather see it replaced with yucatan, or a land map such as silk road. maybe something to look into?

also the civ rules dont avoid the problem of counter civving, but i think thats impossible in general unless you only do mirrors (or mirror mu's aka g1 brits vs fre and then g2 fre vs brits) or players can agree on what mu's are include counter civs.

Correct, fixed.

I agree that 20 gmt might be a bit late. Would 18 gmt in general be better? The goal is to keep a static time to allow for a build up in viewership. I've found that whenever you can have a set, recurring time, it makes it easier for people to follow consistently.

I used these 7 maps as they are the ones I currently have the Obs UI map for. If Aiz ever gets back in action, we can look into changing the map pool.

The civ rules are more a formality to have something to fall back on if it becomes an issue.

Thanks for the feedback.

ok the maps make sense then. overall its a good mappool.

18 gmt would be my preferred option if i had to play a b07. but maybe people from other timezones can shed their light, its still almost 1 month till it starts so enough time to find an adequate starting time

nice idea. Good that you can play winning civ once, for more variation.

too bad no rule for a max usages of all the much stronger civs so prob lot of iro, otto etc again :(
