These notes are for players who are beginner or intermediate, so if you're 1800+ don't read this unless you want to provide feedback. Introduction: I started playing AoM on Steam several months ago after not having played for about 12 years. This was my favorite game of my childhood so I was curious to see how it would resonate with me after all these years. After playing AI and watching/reading numerous guides I settled upon Isis as my favorite god. I decided to focus on this one god because each of the Egyptian majors are quite different from one another; it would be too time-consuming to try and master two at the same time. I noticed there was an achievement 'Champion of the Community' which you receive after 100 online wins. As you might expect these wins can be accumulated by joining team games or playing noobs. I promise you guys that for at least half of these wins I went to 'Host Game' and typed in '1v1'. These games were all unranked and as a result I played against a wide variety of players, from complete noob to borderline expert. I found anyone in the 1650ish range to be a good challenge. Keep in mind I only played Isis, but there is plenty of general information which is highlighted with an asterisk. If you enjoy playing Egypt then everything here should be relevant. TL;DR Haven't played AoM in a long time, here's what I learned playing online. *1. Make sure classical timing is optimal against rushing civilizations. I've seen too many players with these ridiculous classical timings. If you're doing a standard rush you should advance with any civ by around 4:30. You need to be prepared for an Oranos flood or Loki rush. 2. Prosperity, Slingers/Priest loop works against: Atlanteans, Kronos Crush, and Hades. Axemen, Chariots and Priests with Funeral Rites against Loki. Spearmen against Poseidon... you start to get the idea. If the opponent is smart he may change his army comp. though. *3. I wouldn't fast heroic in 2v2, 3v3 against rushing civilizations. Your allies may need your help VERY soon. *4. Don't forget armory upgrades!!! *5. If duking it out in Classical, make at least 2nd TC and don't stop looping villagers until almost max pop. 6. Athena has a tech that makes hoplites super resistant to pierce damage. So don't use slingers against Athena. In fact, avoid fighting Greek in Classical altogether. 7. Build a monument next to your titan gate. Also don't forget to build monuments in general. *8. Never assume to end the game in Classical. So transitioning to heroic and looping military, siege, market, etc. must be done optimally. You want to make a market as soon as you hit Heroic, but you don't usually make caravans until late game. As any of the civilizations population is a precious resource. I don't feel the need to waste it on caravans if I can access most of the gold on the map. 9. Many times you can use A + E defensively or as a distraction. This buys you time to setup your economy after a fast heroic. *10. Sometimes you can make the wrong army comp. and start losing the game, then your enemy is building hill forts in front of your main TC. Keep your cool and make decisions quickly. Rebuild whatever you lost. Defend your TC/s with mercenaries and chariots. Advance to mythic ASAP and use SOO to turn the tide of battle. Don't give up. *11. Abuse the market. Exchange to get important techs sooner than later. 12. Go Hathor on Jotunheim. This map is a stalemate more often that not so try back dooring with Rocs. *13. Loop your villagers from two different TCs simultaneously. 14. This is an addendum to #10, don't be surprised if you have to adapt. For example, If you know opponent has mostly archers, elephants should be at the forefront because they are meat shields and have good pierce armor. If he/she has mostly murmillo heroes and destroyers, loop axemen & chariots. You can backdoor with elephants instead if the economy is strong enough. 15. This should be obvious, but make sure your priests are micro'd onto enemy myth. Don't forget 'Funeral Rites.' 16. Coming out of a fast heroic you will not have enough food to loop elephants right away in a 1v1. This is why you should always consider Camelry. They are a much cheaper and faster alternative. You can use them in combination with A + E to raid your opponent while you build up economy. Ideally after a few of these raids you should be booming. *17. Preemptively building a couple military buildings in your main base can save your TC or create a raid your opponent has no knowledge of. *18. If your builder runs out of houses to build around the towers, finish the job with wall segments. *19. I think its best to focus on getting good at just one god in the game. This has helped me better understand when certain techs become affordable and make more precise decisions. *20. Two cheap improvements you can always afford later on are 'Signal Fires' and 'Crenellations'. They cost very little so you might as well get them. Good luck guys. Play hard and remember to set up your own custom hotkeys. 8) |
