AoM/AoT/EE Version Guide

Terminology:
AoM / Vanilla = The original game which was released in 2002.
The term AoM will often also be used to describe AoM/AoT/EE together which can be confusing. But the context should make it clear if that is the case or if they mean vanilla.
AoT / TT = The first expansion for AoM released in 2003, this added the Atlanteans. The abbreviations stand for "Age of Titans" or "The Titans". We rarely say "Age of Mythology the Titans".
EE / Steam / TotD = The version of the game that is played on Steam and which currently is the only official way of playing the game online. TotD stands for "Tale of the Dragon" which is an expansion that released only for the Steam version of the game in 2016. This expansion added in the Chinese.
You may sometimes hear or remember the abbreviation ESO. This was the old server on which AoM and AoT were played. It has been offline for quite some years now and the term is now just used to refer back to the old days.

Platforms:
There are 2 unofficial platforms on which you can still play AoM/AoT and those two are GameRanger and Voobly. Both have very distinctive communities. GameRanger focusses on casual players while Voobly focusses on both casual and competitive players. It regularly happens that a player plays both on Voobly and EE. The only platform where AoM is still actively played is GameRanger. EE has mostly casual players but there is a small competitive scene as well.

To play on Voobly or on GameRanger you will need to install the 2002/2003 game. You will not need a valid CD-key since the platforms don't check for that. You can either install the game via your old CDs or buy the game here via Amazon. Playing on EE is done by buying the game on Steam. You can freely swap between GameRanger and Voobly with the same installation of the game. EE is a stand alone and needs to be bought in order to be played and can not be used to play on Voobly or GameRanger.

Patch confusion:
AoM has seen 10 patches back in the day and one relevant user patch named "Vanilla Fan Patch". You must update your AoM to patch 1.10 in order to play online. Which can still be done via the game folder since the update servers still work. Go to your AoM root folder and find the file autopatcher.exe and run it. Or you can download it here.
AoT has seen 3 official patches back in the day and a chain of important user patches named "Voobly Balance Patch". Before you can start playing online at all or on the user patches you must update your AoT to patch 1.03. Which can still be done via the game folder since the update servers still work. Go to your AoT root folder and find the file autopatcherx.exe and run it. Or you can download it here.

The possible confusion is that the initial Voobly Balance Patches are named the same as the official patches. The first three patches for AoT were named 1.01 / 1.02 / 1.03 and so are the first three Voobly Balance Patches.
Usually we refer back to the official 1.03 patch by saying "no patch" which means "no user patch". Every game on GameRanger is played on no patch while nearly every game on Voobly is played on the current Voobly Balance Patch.

When people are referring to 2.8 that means they are referring to the current patch being used on EE.

Twitch and Competitive Scene:
Voobly is the main platform for competitive games and Voobly streams usually draw the most attention as well. EE is the second platform for competitive games but those are mostly tournament games. This is because the ladders on EE are from a competitive standpoint unrelevant and inactive. There are a lot of EE streams but a big portion of them is people streaming the campaign (nothing wrong with that of course). GameRanger has a few good players but no ladder or relevant tournaments.
