For this next review of mine I've decided to examine PvT and look at some of the Protoss options. That's why I'm going to be reviewing a Huk replay, arguably one of the best Protoss players in the world at the moment. So let's get into it: Silver (IMG:http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/8438/terran.gif) vs. Huk (IMG:http://img1.imagilive.com/0610/protoss.gif) Map: Steppes of War (IMG:http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/5373/mapwrn.jpg) The Game: So Huk spawns in the 8 o'clock position and his good friend Silver is in the 2 o'clock position on Steppes of War. This map has close ground distances making early aggression pretty viable on this map. This said the main ramp is pretty small giving the defender a small advantage if he's going one base. The ramp leading the natural is much wider however, making people have to think twice before early expanding on this map. The rocks on the side of the natural is a possible second entry for the aggressor, but it's also where your third expansion is located. In this game however HuK will not be opting to go for early aggression however (not counting of course his trademark probe harass, bringing a Supply Depot to orange just for the hell of it). Instead he will opt to go for a pretty fast Robo Bay off of only one gate. Now some of you might question this as it would seem that a simple Marine/Marauder push would completely destroy this. However if you look carefully, you'll see that Huk builds his Robo Bay only after he sees a Bunker go up at Silver's ramp, meaning that Silver will be somewhat defensive in the beginning, giving Huk the time to get a Robo Bay off one gate. It's so important to scout and get an idea of what your opponent is cookin'! So what is he going to do with this Robo Bay? Get Immortals? That would be a nice choice, as Immortals are absolutely stupendous units. But would it be worth it against mass Marines and a Ghost? Probably ... not. Huk's first choice is going to be get an Observer to do just that.. see what Silver has in his Terran base of doom (base of doom? what? did you seriously just say something that cheesy?). The reason this opening is such a good idea is that it gives you a very good idea of what the Terran is up to quite quickly, giving you the time to properly set up the unit composition needed to help you win. In this case, Silver is going Marine/Ghost without any Marauders at all. (IMG:http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/239/observermarine.jpg) They see me rollin- wait they can't see me n_n Of course in the mean time Huk doesn't neglect making military and continues to make Gateway units. With the information gleaned by his trusty flying tin can, Huk knows that he must deal with an infantry heavy army. This is why he chooses to tech to Colossi. In the mean time he must deal with Marines barging up his ramp in a rude manner. Nothing a nicely timed forcefield and some Zealots can't handle. (IMG:http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/3996/focefidl.jpg) Chaaaarge!! Kill the alie- oh sh** Huk comes out as the clear victor of the exchange. A lot of people in this situation sort of go "boing" ( reference ) and just attack the enemy to [attempt to] end the game right then and there. While winning a fight is nice, you must not just .... die at your opponent's ramp, you'd lose that hard won advantage. (IMG:http://icanhascheezburger.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/funny-pictures-little-rabbit-bounces-up-and-down1.jpg) Remember, this is RTS, you must THINK not BOUNCE! But our good friend Huk isn't like that. He's just going to camp outside of Silver's ramp on his expansion and just expand himself. And while he's at it, he's going to research Charge (the kick kermit upgrade). Notice: he's not trying to turn his advantage into a win, he's trying to turn his advantage into a bigger one. Something to think of whenever you've just won a fight. Now this might be a Protossish review, but I seriously have to comment some of the intelligence Silver has shown in his play. If he can't get down his ramp because there are 3 metre tall In doing so this, Silver forces Huk to move his Stalkers back to defend against this treacherous ploy. However without his Stalkers Huk's remaining army can't camp on Silver's natural, they'd get exploded to death by Silver's dudes. So Huk has to move everything back, and this frees Silver's expansion. And Silver gets some Probes. And Silver gets scouting in the base. Could Silver have gotten a better deal? Well, he did get a free Robo Bay. (IMG:http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/8246/raidingparty.jpg) Raiding party! Unfortunately Silver's second drop attempt faces a group of rather pissed off Stalkers who take fiendish delight in lazering down the Medivac with 6 Marines in it. Ahh ze shame. The game carries on. Not to be out done by the fact that Silver get his natural, Huk takes his third so as to maintain an economical advantage, while maintaining an eye on the remaining expansions so that Silver can't get a greedy third as well... a third expansion that he cannot quite defend yet. At this point, with 3 Bunkers, 3 Sieged Tanks and a Sensor Tower, it would be quite hard for Huk to take on Silver's forces. In fact, he would lose. But Silver on the other hand isn't really in a position to perturb Huk either. Huk is controlling the game at this point. Another good play from Silver is getting Missile Turrets. This will let Silver hinder Huk's scouting observer, and the more information you can withhold from your opponent, the better. N1 Silver. However at this point Silver can't afford to hang back too much, he needs to push out to be able to take back some of the map he lost before. So he gives the Bunkers the good ol' salvage, un-sieges his Tanks, checks the mini-map and pushes out a smidgen. Just a smidgen. He barely gets off his natural's ramp in fact. And whomp! comes Huk's army and lays waste. A TTHA (Terran Tank Heavy Army) is quite powerful but extremely immobile. Tanks destroy poopie up when they are in Siege mode... but not as much when they're not. That's why a TTHA is in fact pretty vulnerable when on the move, which is the perfect time for Chargelots to ... well, charge. (IMG:http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/4848/fuuuuuul.jpg) wat? And in this fight Huk comes out once again as the clear victor, nearly doubling Silver's food at the end of it (91f vs 51f). The game is nearly won now (ps, "won now" spelled backwards is "won now", just realised that, isn't that cool?). Did Huk get lucky? Well, if making an Observer and actively using it to glean information here and there, whether it be tech choice or army movements, is considered lucky... well then yeah. Luckiest fruit in the world (no filter). But for the sake of this though process, let's just say that Huk did a real swell job keeping an eye on things. Morality of this story? Well, if you're a Protoss player, make use of those flying tin cans. If you're a Terran player gettin' really tank happy, make sure you're really careful with them. I want to point out that in this game Silver actually was careful. He didn't move very far and already had some guys preparing bunkers and turrets. Had Huk not attacked the game could have ended very differently. Huk had a brief window of opportunity and threw a brick right through it. Scratch that, he nuked that window. All thanks to some proper scouting. Ps, this game has already been posted by Zuta in the Tournament section so it's quite possible that you've already seen it. Furthermore, if you have any comments/suggestions/objections/flames, just say so, I'm all ears. I'm not even good at this game so .. :whistling: Attached File(s)
