I just tried to connect with my friends laptop for a LAN game of aom. I used an ethernet cable, and in network connections it came up as an 'unidentified network', however I could not see his computer in network connections.
I am wondering what you have to do to get the computers connected for lan gaming?

If you have two wireless machines you can run an ad hoc network.

Simply type ad hoc into the search bar if you have vista or windows 7 and it should pop up.

With two machines that don't have wireless capabilities an ethernet cable may work, you might have to configure it a bit though.

It sounds like you're trying to connect the two computers directly into each other. You must use two ethernet cables to connect the computers to a router or some sort of gateway point, then it should work.

Just be careful ;) They are extremely insecure. If you two wanted to use an ethernet cable its possible that it didn't work because you needed a cross-over cable.

just use a router or hub to connect to each other - then you have a network backbone to run off. same thing with wireless, use an existing network in the house if you have one

quickest solution

1) use crossover ethernet cable

2) same ip addresses and subnet mask (for example)

Computer 1
Ip address: 10.10.0.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway 10.10.0.1

Computer 2
Ip address: 10.10.0.3
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway 10.10.0.1

3) both computers in WORKGROUP

4) verify connectivity
Computer 1

start > run > cmd
ipconfig /all
ping 10.10.0.3

Computer 2

start > run > cmd
ipconfig /all
ping 10.10.0.2

5) if ping successful you can now play lan games peer to peer.
