This patch allows you to run AOC on practically any resolution. the attached screenshot is a 1900x1200 resolution (pretty standard for a 24" screen).

How It Works:

It changes the effective resolution of the 1280x1024 (or 1024x768, 800x600) choice to your desktop resolutions (but other options are possible), by changing some of the occurrences of 1280, 1024 and related numbers inside the binary.

It also changes all interface graphics to the right resolution by duplicating some lines and repeating the rightmost pixels.

It writes a new exe and a new version of interfac.drs, both with a different name. The patched exe refers to this new interfac.drs, not to the original one. You can't lose anything.

After running AoE2Wide, you will get a link (batch file) on your desktop that links to the new, hi-res AoE2 ! When you run the batch file it suspends explorer (necessay for Vista and Win 7) and starts AOC in the correct resolution.

It works on NoCD versions only, since the original exe's are encrypted and therefore unpatchable. 1.0, 1.0c and 1.0e supported.

.Net 3.5 SP1 is required, but the supplied MSI will install this for you if necessary.

To install:

The download link takes you to the author's site where you can download the files from the folder /latestpatcher. The only file you need to download is AoE2WideSetup.msi as it will extract the remainder of the files you need. Run that file and select a location to install the files to .. I suggets placing them in a separate folder under your AOE II install directory. The installer will then search for all versions of the AOC exectutable in your install folders (incl sub-directories) and create a patched version of the file and a batch file to suit your screen resolution. For example, for a 1900x1200 resolution it will create age2_x1_1.0c_1920x1200.exe and AoC1.0c 1920x1200.bat in your main AOEII directory. These are new files and your originals won't be modified. To run the game just execute the batch file.

If you want to play on GameRanger you have to have the game started from an originally named age2_x_1.exe in it's proper location. If you need to do this you can make a backup copy of your original file and just rename the patched file to age2_x_1.exe and copy it into place. You can't use the batch file to start the game if you are using gameranger but, apart from suspending explorer which other mods can do for you, the only thing the batch file does is tell the game to start in the correct resolution. I found that if I have started the game up once using the batch file and made sure that the resolution is set correctly in-game I can start it after without the batch file and it is fine .. you will have to experiment for yourself.
