StarCraft II Interview: 4servant

By [A-USi]James246 July 2010

Note: This will be my very last interview as a StarCraft II Content Staff member as I am standing down from my SC2 Content Staff Position due to personal reasons. [NerVe]StudNutz will be taking over the interviews.

General

Name: Thomas
Date of Birth: 12-8-1988
Location: Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Planned StarCraft II Username: Servyoa
Other gaming Usernames: Fz|ServaNtoa, C4tchmeifucan, kekezor

Can you give us a brief description about yourself?

Hi, I am Thomas. I am 21 years and currently doing my specialisation in my engineering degree. I work in Amsterdam but my childhood is in a small town about 50 miles away from the big city.

When did you first get into online gaming, especially the StarCraft series?

I played the origional starcraft together sometimes with some real life mates but never competitive. I started real online gaming with warcraft 3 and later dawn of war. After I left dow about two years ago I tried cnc3 but that game was crap so I went back to StarCraft again about 1.5 years ago now. I nearly reached B+ with terrans in broodwar in iccup season 14. After that I took a break and waited for the SC2 beta.

How did you come about choosing your nickname?

Im crap at creating nicknames so it probably was some random action. I usualy play on a smurf or so.

What is your favourite RTS game?

Probably Commandos 1,2 and Starcraft / dow for competitive RTS play.

Do you play any other online games?

Atm I only play starcraft 2, but sometimes I load in a older game and play a game for fun there.

StarCraft II

What did you think of the StarCraft II Beta?

Balance wise the game is prety good already, though the current map pool really brings some imbalances. Some maps are super good for terran while others are a complete nightmare for me atleast. The gameplay itself is nothing groundbreaking its the same gameplay from 1998 but noobed down so thats prety dissapointing.

How do you think the game will go at launch?

Well the game is called StarCraft and Blizzard always has a huge marketing campaign so the game will sell millions only because of the name. It will probably also have a big tournament scene but I dont think it will surpass warcraft 3 and brood war just yet.

What is your favourite race and why?

Terrans because they got siege tanks and can play a little bit more save than the other 2 races.

What is your least favourite race and why?

I hate to play as zerg, because you only get useless trash units that run every except were you want them to.

Can you describe your StarCraft II play style during the beta?

Focussing everything on getting a strong economy and high tech early game with minimal defenses. After that I always trying to harras my opponents economy or delay his exspansion so that the difference becomes even bigger. I usualy try to end the game with 1 big timing attack. If that fails I usualy go into turtle mode and try to win the game with lategame terran mech.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

My economic sense and multitasking combined with one of the worlds best tank controls are my main strenghts. My weaknesses are that I sometimes push the greedyness early-game to far wich result in simple but idiotic losses. Also I cant really play freestyle so im mostly stuck to some sort of gameplan.

Any tips to a new StarCraft II player?

Dont try to overcomplicate your strategies even for experienced players this is something they can learn. Most strategies discussed in the fourms are being made way harder than they actualy are. Starcraft and Starcraft 2 are mostly about execution and using clean build orders and not deep strategy and tactics.
So focussing on your actual macro and general build order is alot more important than really complex analogies people come with it on the forums. Unless you play at top level (wich isnt reached yet for Starcraft 2) it doesnt matter if your upgrade is done at exactly 6,20 or 6,40 because there are so many other mistakes wich matter alot more than small details.

How often were you been playing the StarCraft II Beta?

For phase 1 and 2 custom and ladder combined I think I got just over 400 games.

Do you think the game will be that much different then the Beta?

I think for multitplayer the beta is what we get for retail. I think Blizzard might add some better sound effects and fix some more bugs but I defenatly dont think expect unexpected things.

Are you looking forward to July 27th 2010 (release of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty)?

Im looking forward to the single player campaign because blizzard always sticks alot of effort in making them with alot of cutscenes so thats nice.

RTS-Sanctuary

When and why did you join RTS-Sanctuary?

Because it is the best source for dow replays and ego&troll boosting forum.

How often do you visit RTS-Sanctuary, and what for?

I try to visit sanc once a day nowdays, but when I left dow I think I didnt visit the forum for a year or so.

What is your favourite thing about RTS-Sanctuary and why?

The offtopic of dowsanc is a goldmine and so many wierdass discussions being held there. Also in dow's better days there were always good flame wars and ego wars going on that were defenatly fun to read.

What is your least favourite thing about RTS-Sanctuary and why?

Sometimes when a serious good discussion is held there is also trolling and flaming going on in there. And I think moderators should clean such threads better.

Who is your favourite member and staff member?

Perser84 because the logic posts he makes and Haxxorized is everyones favourite dow admin ofcourse.

The person behind the player

What have you got planned for your future life?

Im busy with my specialisation on my engineering degree and after that I have to find a job I suppose. I dont really plan much ahead though, I will see what comes for me.

What is your daily schedule?

Well at the moment I got holidays so I dont have to wake up early and I defenatly dont got a schedual atm. When I was working I had to wake up arround 5 AM because work started at 7 AM. After work I generaly could enjoy a dutch traffic jam so I was home really late. Friday is mostly for beers in Amsterdam and the weekends are for games, sports and relaxing.

Do you have any brothers, sisters or partners? Do then play online games as well?

I dont got sisters and brothers and from all people I know, im probably the only one who plays online competitive RTS.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

In good weather I am the first one to take my bike and go for a long ride sometimes alone sometimes not across the dutch dikes and dunes.

What kind of computer do you have (graphics card, processor, mouse, keyboard etc.)?

I got a razer lachessis and a standard multimedia keybord. I got a intel quad core processor and a 9800 GT graphics card.

What is the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing before you go to sleep?

Brushing my teeth and taking a shower.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

When I tried to teach some dudes how to ski and I actualy fell twice on the blue piste. Considering that I have been skiing whole my life people commited suicide for less.

What has been the best moment in your life to date?

Probably when I just had my drivers license and I could go to Austria over the German autobahn. That kinda gives a adrenaline rush.
