Hi guys!

I am new to AOM, having just picked up the game this summer during a Steam sale. I am however, not new to the series, having played AoC and AoE3.

I am already familiar with things such as hotkeys, control groups, macro, etc., and from what I see, these things are more or less static throughout the series, so I am not concerned about these things. I do have some questions though.

1. What is a good faction/god to start with? Why?

2. How active is the online Voobly community? Will I be able to find a game in a reasonable period (5-10 minutes) or will I have to wait hours to find somebody?

3. Is there any way to adapt the Extended Edition to the current Voobly patch? I ask because I have the EE, and in the past downloaded an adapter for AoE2HD to do just this. I wonder is the same sort of thing exists for the original game. If this does not exist, let me know - I will just shell out 5 bucks on Amazon.

Thanks ahead of time for your responses! I hope to learn about this great game while I'm here.

What is your style? I would stay away from norse unless you truly want to play one of them. Your choice is probably between a greek, egyptian, or oranos. If you've played other age of games, greek will make sense to you. But again, it depends on your style.

Voobly is just fine and much better than EE online

EE to Voobly? No, at least not anytime soon...

Oranos is the easiest god to start with, but it is easy to get tied down.

Oranos is definetly the easiest strongest God to start with :) But I prefer trying out all of them. You can learn a lot on aomheavenforums.com and choose the one you like. If you want to play 1v1s you wil usually find an oponent in 5 minutes or less, but if you want to play a teamgame its better if you come online after 15-16 GMT :) Thats it from my experience.

Play Poseidon , I think he is the best god for people who want to learn how to play, 2nd would be Thor/Odin.

I'm sure you can find a game on voobly within 5-10 minutes as long as you aren't on at like 8 gmt (most inactive time) , but even then it's possible to find games at beginner level.

EE and AoT are different games, you need AoT to play on Voobly.

Ontopic: Oranos is definitely the easiest to learn but you won't learn much about the game. Atty players have the tendency to suck at every other civ.
Easiest way to learn is to learn a cookie-cutter strategy such as the Isis Fast Heroic or Loki Hersir raiding and expand from there.

Well Zeus is probably the most similar to other Age of Games civs, but depends on your playing style. Are you more of a boomer? if so pick up Isis.

It's fairly active, around 200-300 people at any given time, i'd say it's very possible to find a game within 10 minutes, depending on your level. At the noobie to lower echelon, very easy. AoM EE can't be adapted as far as I know, yet.

Thanks for your input guys :)

Is Oranos really a good place to start? I have heard that that faction is a bit lame. I am coming into AOM with a good understanding of RTS mechanics, so I don't need a leg up in the form of mobile Atlantean vils. I want to learn to play the real game, not just the noob-friendly civ.

Also, why all the hate on Kronos and Gaia?

I would not start with atlantean. I would start with Greek. They are well balanced - you will correctly get punished for mistakes but awarded for good play

there is no best god to play first, the important part is getting familiar with each god. Just pick one you like and fits you after trying them out.

Kronos is a great agression god, can finish the game in less of 10 mins if you play right.. and a lot of people hate lose vs rush.

and Gaia, the players think the gaia is a unbalanced god and less power.. but is really strong in Boom the Eco upgrades. In heroic and mitic can advance with a useful god in the situation than you are.
