I mean I do not want to lose soldiers like that if the enemy gives back my soldiers that maintain position or return to their place without chasing the enemy |

Do you mean like Defensive Stance? So that the soldiers go a bit to engage the enemy but not beyond certain limit and then they go back? That's standard in the game and you can choose the units' stance when you click on them. |

I’m pretty sure that is stand ground stance. Defensive is simply the unit has to be attacked before chasing its enemy around the map |

stand ground = not move, only ranged units attack what they can within range, melee only fights other melee attacking them defensive = chase for a short distance, if this distance is reached they will return to their position |

I always thought a unit in defensive stance had to be attackrd first before chasing? I dunno I’ve always used aggressive |

Not in over 2000 games of AoT did we ever consider even trying out a stance indicating defense. We are true warriors, Tony, men of honor and a gift to the world. |

In theory defensive stance would be the preferred default stance so your units won't be baited across the map. However it messes up your caravans so you're forced to use aggressive. |
