So I have this assignment to balance these ridiculous chemical equations and I don't know of any 'method' to balance them, so I just know guess and check. Obviously, this is quite slow. Soooo, I was wondering if anyone would like to help me out with doing some chemistry problems and writing it all down on a piece of paper and then uploading the picture (like I've seen people do with math problems on here before) for me. Here are the equations (and they are VERY complicated ones, apparently the second one can get up into the 3 digits for coefficients): CuSCN + KIO3 + HCl --> CuSO4 + KCl + HCN + ICl + H2O [Cr(N2H4CO)6]4[Cr(CN)6]3 + KMnO4 + H2SO4 --> K2CrO7 + MnSO4 + CO2 + KNO3 + K2SO4 + H2O I need to show all the work for the problems so pictures are kind of necessary, so ya, sort of quite a bit of work, but I would be VERY VERY VERY appreciative to anyone who could help me with these! Please and Thank you :D This post has been edited by DoO_Quasar: May 10 2011, 06:28 PM |

Yeah, I need the steps :( Maybe someone like Chrysalis or Ervd will help, I know Ervd is really good at math and he was plenty helpful last time and I generally think of Chrysalis as someone pretty smart and he's still in high school :) |

HAHA that is totally me 11, I do super imba on like all vocab quizzes in foreign languages classes then I have uber trouble remembering later on when I need to use a word, especially words that are not cognates or are specific to a certain milieu of life. Also, I have already forgotten like everything from my College Algebra class last term and don't remember any Chemistry from the first half of this term :wacko: High School ftl :( |

I actually had to do these algebraically cause they were so effing complicated 11. First problem: First assign variables for the coefficients. Obviously CuSCN and CuSO4 and HCN have to have the same coefficient, so call them all x. Same for KIO3 and KCl and ICl, call them y. From yKCl + yICl the total Cl is 2y, so HCl has coefficient 2y. coefficient of H2O is arbitrary, so call it z. xCuSCN + yKIO3 + 2yHCl --> xCuSO4 + yKCl + xHCN + yICl + zH2O From O coefficients: 3y = 4x + z From H coefficients: 2y = x + 2z 6y = 8x + 2z 6y = 3x + 6z 4z = 5x 4y = 7x x = 4, y = 7, z = 5 4CuSCN + 7KIO3 + 14HCl --> 4CuSO4 + 7KCl + 4HCN + 7ICl + 5H2O 4Cu + 4S + 4C + 4N + 7K + 7I + 21O + 14H + 14Cl --> 4Cu + 4S + 4C + 4N + 7K + 7I + 21O + 14H + 14Cl Second problem (this one was an absolute bitch, took forever and complicated as poopie 11): Figuring out the variables was the hard part of this one. (z-48x) is based on H, whereas (z-48x-y) is based on S. x[Cr(N2H4CO)6]4[Cr(CN)6]3 + yKMnO4 + (z-48x)H2SO4 --> 7xK2CrO7 + yMnSO4 + 42xCO2 + 66xKNO3 + (z-48x-y)K2SO4 + zH2O Cr N H C O K Mn S From O coefficients: 24x + 4y + 4z - 192x = 49x + 4y + 84x + 198x + 4z - 192x - 4y + z 24x + 4y + 4z = 331x + 5z 4y = 307x + z 8y = 614x + 2z From K coefficients: y = 14x + 66x + 2z - 96x - 2y 3y = -16x + 2z 12y = 921x + 3z 12y = -64x + 8z 5z = 985x 5y = 630x x = 5, y = 630, z = 985 5[Cr(N2H4CO)6]4[Cr(CN)6]3 + 630KMnO4 + 745H2SO4 --> 35K2CrO7 + 630MnSO4 + 210CO2 + 330KNO3 + 115K2SO4 + 985H2O 35Cr + 330N + 1970H + 210C + 5620O + 630K + 630Mn + 745S --> 35Cr + 330N + 1970H + 210C + 5620O + 630K + 630Mn + 745S haven't done this poopie in two years :lol:, completely useless imo, not even professional chemists need to balance equations by hand lol. that was all the work I did btw, since I did it in notepad :thumbsup: :flowers: This post has been edited by Chrysalis: May 10 2011, 09:05 PM |

ZOMG YOU ARE THE BEST 1111 OP :wub: :wub: :wub: EPIC ONLY ONE IN CLASS WITH PROBLEMS SOLVED EVEN IF I DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO DO THEM (although now I can definitely see how the algebra works, that's cool :)) 8) 8) 8) |
