This is a guide for experienced players. There are 4 strategies that are the strongest and each will be suited to particular match ups. Early Silk Road Jan/Abus When you can get away with delayed military production. (Port, Spain, Dutch* etc) There are two variations for this: 1 - Sending silk road first card in colonial, after having left 20 wood in each starting wood crate and age up crates. This is slightly faster than the second variation, but it is only worth it when you got lucky with a decent wood treasure, due to the fact that you have to chop so much wood in transition to colonial. 2 - Normally gathering starting wood crates and age up crates, sending 700 wood first in colonial but leaving 20 wood in each crate to wait for silk road to arrive (you can send silk road immediately after 700 wood by building a 2nd TP in transition to colonial). Jan/Abus When you need to pressure an opponent early, (French, Dutch, Brit etc.) I find the standard 700w, 700c, 5 Jans, 600c works the best. Vs Dutch I usually add Hussar after 8 minutes if they stay in colonial. FF Seems to work well in Otto mirror and vs. German and Russia. If you are pressured early - send 700 food instead of 700 wood for 5 Spahi - you will win the game with a minutemen trap. Otherwise, follow the normal 700g, 700w, 8 jan, 2 falc, 1000g, 5 mams Strat. Take a second TP in transition to colonial if you do not expect early pressure. Upgrade the route in transition to fortress. Always place the age up tower as close as possible to the enemy TC but try to conceal it. The exception to this would be in an Otto mirror if you are expecting early pressure or vs Russia when doing ff. Schooner Boom Go schooners first card on Hispaniola, there is not much point to sending it first on any other map, because stage couch is a better investment early on, but going full sea boom (3 or 4 docks pumping boats) after stage couch is definitely viable after 8-9 minutes into the game when you can afford it (taking all TP's and setting them to wood). * Dutch can apply early pressure, enough to win a game if your military production is delayed too much because of early silk road play, similarly, if you do not apply early pressure against dutch their economy will be too strong. Annoying Maps: Texas - always FF, though sometimes you can get away with a FI for Guard Spahi and bombards. FI on Texas seems to work well in Otto mirrors or vs Russia, sometimes you can do it vs Brit. On Bayou, have a deck with Native Treaties card. Don't attack with only the Natives, add Jans and push around 7 minutes when you can handle Cavalry.. most people then go to III after a decent push of Nats and Jans. I find just going FF on bayou to work just as well as a native rush, but vs french and dutch it is much better to apply early pressure to keep them from booming. Finally the success of Otto comes from following a few simple rules; - not losing your army (it's very expensive); never go 'all in', while you have a much superior army, you can still be minutemen trapped - Whenever you lose momentum while playing Otto you leave yourself open to raids. This is a problem because usually Otto doesn't make Cav. To avoid losing momentum, apply pressure. (even when going FF you should be aiming to push around 7 minutes if they are booming) - While Silk Road gives you a superior mass to most civs at around the 8-12min mark, the slightly delayed military production can allow the enemy to boom. Choose wisely when to use silk road. - Ranged Cavalry (mainly goons and ruyter) is a huge problem for Otto, as there is no effective counter. Once again, apply early pressure so the enemy never gets to fortress unscathed. This post has been edited by nat0: Dec 2 2012, 03:14 AM |

not relly, follow the strat and see for yourself. with a non silk road strat, such as in an otto mirror, where u send 700 wood first card in colonial, it does make sense to go 700c, 600c, because you only gather 250 wood during age up time for 2nd tp, then those villies go straight back on food. here, u have to gather a fair bit more wood. this means you can get pretty food dry very early colonial. if u go 600 coin after 700 coin with this strat you wont be able to keep 5/5 jannies. you will also make too many abus which is problem vs some civs. bear in mind that it is actually a total of 1690 coin that you are sending too with silk road, thats just more than you can use at that stage.
