Yeah but you're referring to special cases. US education needs to change. I come to MIT and because I'm extremely poor I get my tuition paid for by the school+federal aid without loans. However, there are people here in the middle/upper middle class paying full tuition +housing (~ $53,000/year). Trust me, they can't afford it. And I have to say this place is not worth $53,000. A lot of unrelated things are done with student's tuition money. They make new research buildings, fund new research, prepare activities for people who aren't even from MIT, etc. However, they fail to give you a good education. The only reason MIT students know more than other students is because they are very motivated and the classes are a lot more difficult than at other universities. The quality of the teaching however, is often times worse. There is no reason tuition can't be lower .... specially if you consider that most research projects are taken up by professors to stay in academia and not because they actually care so they make minimal progress or say they do to remain at MIT. It's a waste of money. Summary is, it should not be free, but definitely cheaper. Money doesn't make education better or worse. That's a flaw in most people's reasoning. Back in Cuba education was much better and we were given one notebook for all classes for the entire year. Imagine that! We had to make sure to write tiny -_- and yet when I got to this country I was much more advanced than the American students of my grade and I went to an A+ elementary/middle school. |

I just worked my way through college and never borrowed a penny. Its not that hard at all. When I graduated, the only debt I have is my house. You just gotta have some common sense. Don't spend more than you make. If you can't afford something, don't splurge and do it anyways. A little bit of self control goes a long way. |

Food and education can never be free, because there will always be better chefs and teachers and they will want more money, and deserve it, and then that just comes to where we are now with better schools costing more etc |

Are you saying people who can't afford MIT even though they have the required potential to be here should go to a mediocre state school because they can't afford to pay tuition? So basically, get closer to being a class-structured society and waste the few talented Americans we have. MIT for the rich and for the foreign rich. And there is no way to work your way through a top tier university. Even if you can manage the course load+work you'll never make enough. It doesn't even have to be top tier. Many school have high tuition. There are opportunities like the Florida bright futures scholarship which is pretty easy to get, etc. However, this limits your choices and while I agree on not spending more than you make, I do not think it's beneficial for a society to limit its students. The US's biggest strength is its technical know-how and strong engineering tradition. |

However, food prices have nothing to do with chefs. More importantly, better teachers don't actually get paid more. Many professors at MIT are extremely bad lecturers and don't care about students in the least yet they make well over $100,000/year because they have some insignificant research project which takes several years to get minimal progress in. You can easily get an excellent professor for a lot less money. I know because I've had them. |

first of all: nothing can be free. It can be paid by individual or by government. When it is paid by government it is also paid by us, from our taxes. education paid by government (our taxes) is a really good in some cases since it allows all people to get an education independently to they social status/number of money they have or get but it has got also many negatives: 1) it support average, the best universities do not always get the money they deserve. 2) large amount of money from taxes is wasted in system (all civil servant, institutions, commission) then money get to school or UNI. 3) student are not that motivated, system supports loafers. 4) it supports also corruption. just to show that nothing is ideal. Being a full time student + working full time is not something a normal person can manage. Besides that, there is no way I would make over 50K a year while still in school. I think that most universities could cut back on expenses that aren't necessary so that their students don't have to pay so much. My school rolls out new grass over its 200 acre campus every year.... I think the normal grass that grows by itself is more than fine. There's probably a ton of things they waste money on. :hmm: |

QUOTE(DoO_Quasar @ Jul 19 2011, 03:26 PM) I hate CNN, and most major news networks for that matter. Saying America needs to improve on something does not make you anti-American. And of course our Ivy League schools are among the best in the world, but the largest problem with this is that we educate the brightest students from around the world at them and then send them right back home. We are not investing in ourselves at all :( America print this quote and mail it to your local rep. If you all shout the same message loud enough it will happen, the rest of the world is just waiting for you loud yanks to get off your fat asses and do it so western civilisation can continue moving forwards however you make it happen. |
