Okay you fluffy experts, I'm confused about the whole lore behind Dreadnoughts. I understand they're basically living tombs for fallen Space Marines but what is the, well, theology behind it? Does the Machine Spirit allow the dead Marine to basically be resurrected into the Dreadnought? Does it have something to do with a gene-seed? How in the world do they put a dead dude in a mech suit and make him live again? Of course I understand there is some suspension of disbelief with all fantasy and scifi, I'm just curious to know if the fluff provides some sort of explanation. |

It seems that you have been mislead a little. "...The pilots of Dreadnoughts are mighty Space Marine heroes who have suffered mortal wounds in battle. If it is deemed that they must survive they can be saved from death by being encased within an armoured sarcophagus. It is a great honour to be deemed worthy enough to be turned into a Dreadnought. The withering body is surgically implanted into the war machine sarcophagus which is then inserted into the Dreadnought shell. New mechanical senses allow him to perceive the world around him and continue the fight for the Emperor for centuries longer than would normally be the case...." So basically you could say that a dreadnought is a 'sarcophacus', but only in a metaphoric way, as it encases an 'as good as dead' brother. Its rather a 'clinical dead' marine, revived by turning him into a dread rather than actually an totally 'biologic dead' marine who is encased in a new dreadnought shape. And erm, wtf is 'zimmers' - other then the german word which could be translated with "rooms" - and wouldn't make much sense here (esp not in a funny way) imo. The Dreadnought is basically a mix between life support and a massive suit of armour for a mortally wounded Marine. Due to their advanced physiology Space Marines, as we know, can survive incredible wounds. Wounds which will eventually kill them, but not right away (there have been records of Marines having their upper torso detached from their body and surviving to be implanted into a dreadnought) allow them time to be transferred into the sarcophagus of a Dreadnought. They control the movements of the machine as if it was their own body, and they speak using Vox-Casters, which are basically the 40K equivalent of a radio. If the Space Marine is too damaged to speak normally, then I suppose this is where 39,000 years of scientific progress kicks in in any number of ways. |

mind to computer interface. it could be a brain floating in fluid with electrodes connected, basically it uses the SM's old brain to control the new and improved dreadnaught body. |

IIRC it's called a man-machine interface. Or rather, that's the term for it outside 40k. |

In extreme cases, think Kain in Robocop 2, his brain and spinal column surgically implanted into a suit of armour (although Dreads are obv. way cooler than Robocop 2) :-) |

Nice affiliation Corruption lol. True too. So what about Defilers? I often see a little head on top of the thing. Is that the equivalent of an SM Dreadnought? |

The Chaos equivalent of a Space Marine Dreadnought is a Chaos Dreadnought :3 |
