Hi,

I've been watching a lot of aom streams on twitch and I noticed that 95% of the community doesnt seem to know how the ingame chat works, so I thought I'd make a short article teaching the fundamentals of it. I made this in form of 10 short rules. Enjoy!

Foreword: ES did make it needlessly confusing. I don't know why and don't even want to think of any possible reasons. Anyway, let's go on:

1. How do I know this? The chat works exactly as it does in AoE2, with the only exception being that in AoM you can't see who you are talking to. In AoE2 it says <all> when you are talking to everyone, but in AoM they for some reason left that out. Other than that, everything is identical. So in AoM the chat is actually done worse than in AoE2. Why, beats me.

2. The chat works differently in 1v1 and in team games.

3. Just use the enter key to type your message. Maybe you know this, but you probably don't really know who's listening to what you type.

4. In 1v1 "everyone" is the default choice.

5. In team games "allies only" is the default choice. Yes, regardless of what you see in the chat selection window in the upper right corner of the screen.

6. The chat selection window opening from the upper right corner is basically useless. You should never click it, because it is the only way you can accidentally start talking to your enemies what you meant your allies only to hear.

7. When you open the chat selection window in the upper right corner, it changes the chat option to "select all" and displays it to you. Before you opened the window, it was, as I said earlier, set on ally chat (assuming you were in a team game). So dont click it ever and you'll be fine.

8. If you want to talk to everyone in team games, you can type a star (*) in the beginning of your message to make everyone hear. In AoE2 this adds <all> to your message as I said, but in AoM it doesnt. But believe me, everyone hears.

9. After the game is over, the chat automatically sets to "select all" and you cant even ally chat. No reason to click in the upper right corner at this point, either.

10. In low level games you often see people type "ac" in the beginning of the game. This is called collective obsessional behavior in pschology, or something like that, I'm not really a psychologist. Anyway, point is, you see other ppl type "ac" you start to think it makes sense and is something you should do yourself, too, to fit in. It doesnt make sense. You just dont know how the chat works. Hopefully you do now.

Oh, I just made the account to make this one post so I chose as my nick the first word that came to my mind without thinking too much about the fact that some ppl migt think I'm impersonating. I'm mainly an aoe2 player, but I have also played aom on and off since its release. '
